It is a beautiful example of the villas that the wealthy families of Lucca constructed centuries ago to get away from the heat and noise of the city. The villa’s antique furnishings and preservation of the building’s historic character will appeal to design connoisseurs and history buffs.
The home is surrounded by a big garden with stone walls, typical of the area, that features trees that are hundreds of years old, as well as fountains, ponds, and space to enjoy meals and relaxation outdoors. The gardens, which are built on a series of terraces, each with its own unique feel, provide astonishment and excitement at every turn, with everything from cozy nooks to expansive fields of green grass. The lemon trees, lavender, and other native plants that dot the narrow streets help to create an unforgettable sense of being transported back in time.
The villa’s location—just 5 kilometers from Lucca—makes it a convenient home base for exploring the rest of Tuscany’s major cities, including Florence, Pisa, Siena, and San Gimignano. About half an hour’s drive are the beaches, restaurants, nightlife, and shopping of the Versilia coast (Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi). The walled garden ensures complete seclusion, and yet the property is only a few minutes’ stroll from Ponte a Moriano’s bustling town center.
The villa’s four stories and 2,560 square meters in total area are all part of a single structure, but they each have their own look and feel. The first level, which features frescoed walls and vaulted ceilings, was once the owner’s living quarters. Thicker wooden beams and rich terracotta floors give the first and second floors a more homey, country vibe.
On the ground floor, you’ll find the foyer (formerly the ballroom) that leads to the vast wine cellar decorated with vintage wine and olive oil barrels, a game room with a billiard and ping pong table, and a bedroom with an attached bathroom and French doors leading out to the garden. The summer kitchen, which features a fully-stocked barbecue and an antique stone oven perfect for baking pizza, is accessible via a separate entrance. The main level features a grand dining room, two huge living rooms, a library with floor-to-ceiling antique bookcases, a large kitchen with direct access to the garden, seven bedrooms, and seven bathrooms. There are four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and two spacious living areas on the second story.
